Well, it’s Columbus Day again.
No matter your feelings on the holiday, here are a few facts about it and the namesake:
1. The holiday became official in 1937.
2. Hawaii, Alaska, Oregon, and South Dakota do NOT recognize the holiday.
3. Christopher Columbus was born in Italy, not Spain.
4. After Columbus died (1506), his heirs started a long legal battle with the Spanish crown. They claiming the monarchy short-changed them on money and profits. Most of the lawsuits were settled by 1536.
