The Little Red Owl

DIY ideas for home, health, & life

So…I love sad music, sad movies, sad things. I don’t think it’s morbid or depressing-I think it can actually be uplifting and help us empathize and sympathize with the world around us and our own life and connections.

I have a playlist of all sad songs that I love to bust out pretty regularly. I offered this playlist to my sister once (b/c it’s SO good) and it did not appeal to her-she didn’t understand why I would want to listen to sad music. Besides the fact that the songs are awesome and beautiful, they make you feel. I do not get depressed while listening to them, though I may still cry over the songs.

Yes, I am the crazy girl next to you on the highway singing at the top of her lungs and crying while driving alone. Awesome right?

Here are 5 sad songs from my list. I encourage you to give these a listen-you just might like the sadness :)

1. Broken by Denison Witmer from the album Safe Away:

safe away

You hate what I said
You’re scared that there
Might be some truth inside all of this
That makes your life look bad

There’s still more to this
You said that you
Have to go make what you want of this
It’s not just you involved
It’s not just you involved

What happened to the girl I used to know
What happened to the girl I’ve always loved

I hate what you did
I’m scared that I
Might have to let go for good this time
So I get out alive

There’s still more to this
I think that you
Know how you hurt me so deep inside
And if you don’t then you should know
If you don’t then you should know

There’s no doubt that we could get through this
There’s no doubt that you have left him in
There’s no doubt that I need to forgive
There’s no doubt that I might stay broken

*I remember hearing this song for the first time. I was at my boyfriend’s house (now Husband) laying on his futon trying to nap and this song came on. I could not hold in my tears in that moment. This song is so sad and haunting. The song also has an unfinished quality to it and when you listen to the entire album it is quieter and more subdued than every other song-so beautiful and heartbreaking.

2. Mexican Boyfriend by Shivaree from the album Who’s Got Trouble:

I wore the dress that you liked almost everyday
Boxed up all my baby dolls and gave them away
I wrote your name on the wall next to my bed
Any day that I saw you at all was circled in red

What they said was a man drifted over the line
Drove you away and a little girl out of her mind
And the rain fell down and washed off your face
Washed you away, left carnations and stone in your place

My first cigarette and my first pill
My first cup of coffee and my first chill
Now you’ll never know my first kiss
Somebody else will
Cause you were the first one I saw
Holding that still

*I picked up this album on a random trip to the library while living in South Bend, IN. I walked up and down the isles and just picked up any CD that I liked the look of and took them home. I like Shivaree right away and once I heard this painfully sad song I was hooked. To this day I will well up just thinking about this song.

3. She by Over the Rhine from the album Ohio:

ohio

What she would like to do, is get you out of her head
She’s tried every trick, she’s so sick of thinking about it
What’s so special about you, you’re an ache she’s learned to crave
You’re a blade too dull to raise

But she cuts herself on you every night
She’s just dying to lay down the knife

What she would love to do is get you out of her bed
She’s played it over and over and over in her head
But she cuts herself on you every night
She’s just dying to lay down the knife

She clings to what’s familiar
She thinks a change would kill her

What she ought to do is put a gun to your head
For all the things you said and did
But what she will not do is let you go before you’re gone
It’s everything that’s ever been wrong but it’s all she’s ever known

So she cuts herself on you every night
She’s just dyin’ to lay down her life

What she would like to do, is get you out of her head

*This song is so sad to me because this girl wants to be free, she wants to move on, the people around her know she needs to be free of him BUT it isn’t that simple. Being a human means fighting your heart with your head sometimes and that is easier said than done. We are cursed with knowing our own short comings and constantly fighting them even when we know better. I think almost everyone is touched by this story somehow-either personally or through a friend…it can be so frustrating.

4. Tonight Will be Fine by Leonard Cohen, as covered by Teddy Thompson:

Sometimes I find I get to thinking of the past.
We swore to each other then that our love would last.
You kept right on loving, I went on a fast,
now I am too thin and your love is too vast.
But I know from your eyes
and I know from your smile
that tonight will be fine,
will be fine, will be fine, will be fine
for a while.

I choose the rooms that I live in with care,
the windows are small and the walls almost bare,
there’s only one bed and there’s only one prayer;
I listen all night for your step on the stair.

But I know from your eyes
and I know from your smile
that tonight will be fine,
will be fine, will be fine, will be fine
for a while.

Oh sometimes I see her undressing for me,
she’s the soft naked lady love meant her to be
and she’s moving her body so brave and so free.
If I’ve got to remember that’s a fine memory.

And I know from her eyes
and I know from her smile
that tonight will be fine,
will be fine, will be fine, will be fine
for a while

*The first 4 lines of this song are so enormously sad that I can barely listen to them, but I LOVE them at the same time. Teddy Thompson’s simple cover is beautiful and his voice is amazing.

5. Westfall by Okkervil River from the album Don’t Fall in Love with Everyone You See:

I’m surrounded, each doorway covered
By at least twenty men
And they’re going to take me, throw me in prison
I ain’t coming back again
I ain’t coming back again
When I was younger, handsomer and stronger
I felt like I could do anything
But all of these people making all these faces
Didn’t seem like my kith and kin
Didn’t seem like my kith and kin
Colin Kincaid from the twelfth grade
I guess you could say he was my best friend
Lived in a big tall house out on Westfall
Where we would hide when the rain rolled in
Where we would hide when the rain rolled in
We went out one night and took a flashlight
Out with these two girls Colin knew from Kenwood Christian
One was named Laurie, that’s what the story
Said next week in the Guardian
Said next week in the Guardian
And when I killed her it was so easy
That I wanted to kill her again
I got down on both of my knees and
She ain’t coming back again
She ain’t coming back again
Now, with all these cameras focused on my face
You’d think they could see it through my skin
They’re looking for evil, thinking they can trace it, but
Evil don’t look like anything
Evil don’t look like anything
Evil don’t look like anything
Evil don’t look like anything
Evil don’t look like anything
Evil don’t look like anything
Evil don’t look like anything
Evil don’t look like anything
*This song is disturbing and sad. Not only does some poor girl get murdered for no reason, the guy who did it does not seem remorseful. The most haunting part of the song is the last line: “evil don’t look like anything”. So true. We think we are in control in this world and this song is reminder that we are not, not even a little.
