The Little Red Owl

DIY ideas for home, health, & life

Here is a photo of my living room (it has changed a little since but forgive me for the old photo):

So a few things have changed already but the layout for the big furniture is the same. See the shelves in the right corner?

This shelf is starting to feel oddly-placed and too crowded for me. My parents recently painted their DIY built-in wood shelves in their living room and it has inspired me (they look awesome but sadly I have no pics at this time).

As you probably remember Husband and I moved from a 2 story 3 bedroom home with a basement to a 2 bedroom (no dining room) apartment. We LOVE our apartment but it is considerable smaller and storage is a fun task to complete (but I LOVE the challenge truth be told). I could use more storage and I know having more shelves means I could spread stuff out a bit-instead of cramming it all on one shelf in the living room. The goal is NOT to get more stuff to fill these shelves, I stress that to you and to myself-I need to reminder:)

I LOVE the Expedit shelving from Ikea (I currently own 3 But I have had up to 5 before including the biggest one they make).

Expedit now has high gloss colors available! Yes please!

Unfortunately the size shelf I want is only available in birch, white, or black-brown:

So, what to do?

I was originally thinking of adding the above size shelf to the ends of the couch/corners of the living room and then putting another 2X4 shelf behind the couch/in between the windows.

Now I am worried about these being too short in comparison to the windows and my high living room ceiling. AHH!

So…I am thinking maybe the Billy bookcase is a better option-it is about 20 inches taller than Expedit!

BILLY Bookcase IKEA Narrow shelves help you use small wall spaces effectively by accommodating small items in a minimum of space.

BILLY Bookcase IKEA Adjustable shelves can be arranged according to your needs.

Or I could go for these open shelving units:

I hesitate with open shelving though-you cannot hide ANYTHING. I am not sure I want to commit to that yet.

I am leaning towards the Billy bookcases and putting them in the two corners and in the middle of the windows.

How tall are the windows and ceiling? And how tall is the tallest shelf? I personally would not use the open shelves. It would be too hard.

The windows are about 90-100 inches high (almost to the ceiling) and the tallest shelf is 79 inches.
I have ruled out the open shelves :)
I am now thinking I don’t want to spend any money-so I’m trying to come up with another solution using what I have. I’ll update the blog soon.
      Thanks for your input!

The thing is, the couch is lone, need more space between them. And if will look crowded with shelves between the Windows. I think you might like lower ones.
